Right, a must-read for all of us who remember the original Joe McCarthy . . . you know, the guy who liked to accuse people who disagreed with his politics of being Communists. I used to enjoy George Will's columns because he's an excellent writer and usually raises interesting points, but after this kind of political slumming, I think I'll just relegate him to the Hysterical Right, where he obviously belongs, along with everyone else who admires Ronald Reagan and his political hero Joe McCarthy.
Let's substitute social conservative for environmentalism; societal for "environmental" and you have:
"For some people, social conservatism is collectivism in drag. Such people use religious causes and rhetoric not to change the political climate for the purposes of societal improvement. Rather, for them, changing the society's politics is the end, and societal policies are mere means to that end."
Hmmmm, an interesting turn-about, but ultimately convoluted and skewed. Social conservatives are not collectivists, and the greatest dichotomy between modern liberals and conservatives is ultimate truth, or the notion thereof. Liberals, mainly, are relativistic, believing there is no ultimate right and wrong. Hence Will's ends to means argument. Conservatives are the opposite. So, you would have to play around with that last sentence to make a valid point.

Chen, didn't you just do the same thing? What's the difference between the "Hysterical Right" and calling someone a communist?
